The Microsoft Base Smart Card
Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) supports the .NET Corporate smart card
using the Gemalto Card Module plug-in. All of the software needed to enable the
.NET Corporate smart card is available from Microsoft Windows Update and
included in Windows Vista. This architecture not only ensures security through
strong authentication, but also supports easier, more cost-effective deployments
because companies do not need to purchase and install proprietary software to
enable .NET smart cards for their employees, therefore lowering the cost of
ownership for identity management and two-factor authentication.
Gemalto developed the high performance, optimized card module that supports the .NET smart card. In addition, Microsoft has provided a simple card management tool to change the smart card PIN and unblock the smart card.
